DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, split-seconds chronograph of very unusual design, 14S, likely 16J, gold-filled OF original C.W.C.Co. (Crescent Watch Case Co.) case, white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, electrum gilt mvt, s#3492868. A very interesting example with a movement layout and chronograph design which we have not encountered before among the numerous Waltham split-seconds chronographs we have seen. The electrum gilt finish of this example is also interesting, and we have observed a few other unusual (though not identical to this example) Waltham split-seconds chronographs with electrum gilt plate finish, and we suspect these watches may have been intended for the European market.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good primary chronograph function, split-seconds function engages but its reset is often sluggish or incomplete particularly when hands are of greater distance separation, overhaul needed for normalized split-seconds function, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some small fine to micro-fine scratches to barrel bridge; dial with hl from edge near 9 to left side of seconds-register, very faint secondary hl branching off its mid-point and extending to center, dial with additional faint hl from edge at 3:30 to right side of seconds-register; fine hands, minute with crimp and bend near mid-point; case shows light wear, some nicks and mild dings to band, reduced engine turning detail with full loss near center and to portions of shoulder; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
